CHENNAI: In a welcome development, Indian swimmers Srihari Nataraj and Sajan Prakash will likely travel to Serbia and Italy in June to compete in Olympic qualifying competitions. Srihari and Sajan both achieved a B qualifying score for the Tokyo Olympics, but need the A mark to seal the automatic qualification. The deadline for qualification is June 27. While Srihari is currently in Bangalore, Sajan is training in Dubai.
Both had hoped to attend the Mare Nostrum meeting in Monaco at the end of this month, but had to miss out due to travel and quarantine restrictions. The Indian Swimming Federation (IFC) has now started the visa process for Srihari and Sajan to participate in the Tour of Belgrade in Serbia, scheduled for June 19-20, followed by the International Settecolli Trophy in Rome, Italy on June 25. 27. Confirmation of the European trip should arrive next week.
“We have started the visa process for swimmers. Serbia has no quarantine requirements, nor has it put India on the travel red list. Since the swimmers will go to Serbia first, the trip to Italy will not be a problem, ”SFI Secretary Monal Chokshi said on Friday.
Although Italy has quarantine requirements, swimmers are likely to travel to Serbia early so they can spend around 10 days there and not be quarantined in Italy.
“Italy’s quarantine requirements can be lifted if Indian swimmers are in Serbia for 10 days and depart from there. The swimmers will therefore leave for Serbia around June 9 or 10 and will not have a quarantine in Italy, ”the official informed.
Their last event was the Uzbekistan Open in April, where Srihari failed to achieve the 100m backstroke A qualifying time of just 0.22 seconds.
Meanwhile, three other Indian swimmers who have achieved the B qualifying score – Kushagra Rawat, Aryan Makhija and Advait Page – are currently based in the United States and are looking to make the cut through competitions there.
