If Wicker is serious, he should consider Tijuana for the Aztec games

Serve me …

I have a word, a geographic location that JD Wicker must keep in his fertile mind as he scans the arid landscape of the regional stadium: Tijuana.

If things don’t work out with City Hall in the current voter-approved SDSU campus / stadium expansion in the Valley, JD says he’ll look elsewhere – maybe even the 27,000-seat Carson site that the Judases / LA Lodgers have so modestly occupied. – before renewing his SDCCU lease after this year.

OK, so that sounds like an amateur bluff on Wicker’s part – and probably is – but questions remain.

Maybe downtown Ham & Eggers will finalize the deal on Friday, but I’ve already walked through that door. Unexpectedly.

Knock before entering.

Do we really think this new stadium will be football ready by 2022? Won’t there be legal action to stop the manure disruptors who believe the city is giving way? Can football continue in the SDCCU stadium dump after 2022?

Wicker worries that concrete clods will fall and endanger the fans. This is something to seriously consider. Former stadium manager Bill Wilson told me at least 15 years ago parts of the stadium were leaking.

And, while Carson looks silly, where can Wicker put games in here?

Nowhere. Except Tijuana.

Carson rests 100 miles to the north, and although Wicker says there are many ancient Aztecs residing in the Orange County-LA area, there are also several thousand here, and they don’t congregate to attend SDCCU matches.

Tijuana is 29 km from the city center. Estadio Caliente, home of Xolos football club, can accommodate around 33,000 seats, making it the perfect size.

I haven’t been there, but a lot of people I trust say it’s very nice. Logistics wouldn’t be ideal and border restrictions would have to be eased, but getting to Carson on a normal Saturday isn’t exactly a walk along the Embarcadero.

Trolley, Uber, Elevator, taxi to the border. Fiesta!

So maybe my tongue is a bit in the cheek. But I have been to Tijuana several times (not lately). I prefer to go south rather than north. And, after all, the original Aztecs were in Mexico.

The plan for the landlocked SDSU to take over the Mission Valley site is good – educationally. Building a 35,000-seat stadium is not. Too small. Here at Mayberry by the Sea, there is a purpose to the little one.

What happened, of course, is the fault of Ham & Eggers. It didn’t just start with the City Hallians botching every stadium proposal this century.

It really started in the mid-1970s when the city’s former Ham & Eggers ordered the Balboa Stadium shave. It was deemed dangerous for earthquakes, but that was only supposed to be the upper deck, which was added for the arrival of chargers. Balboa’s concrete bottom was in a canyon and was not going anywhere.

But everything went, the indescribable reason being that it had become a puzzle (security, maintenance) that the town hall no longer wanted to manage. Without the upper deck, it held at least 23,000. And it could easily be expanded.

We are left with nothing significant other than the unmaintained SDCCU, which should be doomed. Wicker has the right to worry.

Petco is not a solution.

Good for SDSU. Maybe bad for SDSU. Good for Carson? Or Tijuana?

Cuidado.
