Harry Wilson urges Wales to beat Turkey to avoid inevitable meeting with Italy | Euro 2020
Harry Wilson has said Wales need to beat Turkey to ease the pressure of potentially having to win their final Group A game against Italy in Rome. Wales saved a draw in their first Euro 2020 game against Switzerland, but failing to defeat Turkey would seriously damage their chances of reaching the round of 16.
Wales face Turkey in Baku on Wednesday hours before Italy, one of the favorites to win the tournament, host Switzerland. “If we can win it puts us in a strong position for the last game because we saw how the Italians look like a strong team,” Wilson said.
“It’s going to be tough, this game in Rome, but if we can go there with four points already on the board, it puts us in a fantastic position to get through the squad. I think the first game of a tournament is always a game not to lose and we didn’t. We got a point that could turn out to be a good point. There is certainly more pressure on the game against Turkey than there is would have had if we had won.
Robert Page could change the lineup to a three-way defense, while Wilson could feature in attack if the interim manager comes back to playing a false nine. Wales looked vulnerable against Switzerland, but Wilson said the mood in the camp remained optimistic after managing to avoid defeat. Swiss substitute Mario Gavranovic thought he scored on his first touch, but his goal six minutes from time was ruled offside by the video assistant referee.
“It’s certainly not catastrophic,” Wilson said. “The game could have gone one way or the other and in order not to lose we have to take it as a positive and make sure we win on Wednesday. We know the Turkish fans will be here by the thousands so the mood will be good, but it’s up to us to make sure we calm them down and come away with the three dots we all want.
