German tourists investigated in Italy for fatal boat accident | World news
ROME (AP) – Two German tourists from Munich are being investigated in Italy over a boat collision on Lake Garda that killed an Italian man and woman, Italian Rifleman paramilitary police said.
Italian state RaiNews24 TV said investigators were awaiting blood test results on Monday to determine whether tourists had been drinking before the crash. He said the two are free to commit themselves while they are investigated for manslaughter and non-assistance.
The woman’s body was found in the lake on Sunday evening by Italian rescue divers and the man’s body was found in their small boat earlier today.
Rifle officers at the station investigating the crash were not immediately available for comment.
Corriere della Sera said the victims’ boat was severely gashed to one side near the bow and the man, 37, sustained a serious abdominal injury. One of the 25-year-old’s legs was partially torn off, he said. A search was launched to locate the woman after women’s clothing was found on the boat where the man’s body lay.
Police located the tourists after people noticed their motorboat at the dock was damaged, the Italian daily said.
The lake with its many resorts in northern Italy is very popular with European visitors.
The Italians reportedly met friends ashore on Saturday night, then walked over to the man’s boat and were roughly in the middle of the lake when the ship was struck by the motorboat. Corriere della Sera said investigators found pieces of wood from the Italian man’s boat embedded in the tourist boat.
