I might be the afternoon DJ on a classic rock radio station, but I love all forms of music. I think at this point in the pandemic I’m so desperate to see live music that if someone were to sit on a street corner humming in a kazoo and farting, I would stop and j would listen.

I wrote about the New Haven Symphony Orchestra last fall. They were also desperate to continue playing live music during the coronavirus, so they did a series of concerts at New Haven’s Canal Dock Boathouse on Long Wharf Drive.

I just saw an ad on their social media that they are doing it again, and they extended it to 14 concerts at the Boathouse and a few special performances in downtown New Haven. It’s such a cool place and a series of events I thought you might like to hear about.

According to the post, musicians from the New Haven Symphony Orchestra will be giving 14 different performances on Friday and Sunday afternoons, May 21 through July 4, 2021 at Canal Dock Boathouse, and there will also be free pop-ups. the performances also took place in the window at 900 Chapel Street on New Haven Green. All 14 performances at the Canal Dock Boathouse are paid events, and tickets for each individual show go on sale Monday, April 19, 2021 at noon. You can find out more and get tickets by clicking on HERE

If you’ve never been to Long Wharf Drive in New Haven, it’s nice out there on a hot spring day. The view is beautiful and Long Wharf Drive is also a very famous Food Truck destination, dozens of people line up and serve lunch and dinner.

Stroll along Long Wharf Drive, eat street tacos, hot and fresh churros, and listen to Shubert, John Phillip Sousa, Phillip Glass or Leonard Bernstein? I’m in.

“I always have a lot to say,” she laughs, contemplating a record overflowing with interesting ideas and collaborations.

Where her 2017 Life Love Flesh Blood collection signaled a departure from her rockabilly roots and her trademark, at the lyrical level, she says, she “doesn’t mince my words anymore.”

“All the times I wrote before, I was always very honest but I found a way to hide what I wanted to say behind rock ‘n’ roll. For this album, and the last album, I stopped doing that and just said what I wanted.

“Each song is very personal to me and each song is about love in a different form – not necessarily romantic love, it can be supportive love or friends or universal love.”

Although she said she had a “fabulous time” making records such as Love Tattoo and Mayhem, her interests were increasingly diverse. “I started with blues and jazz,” she says. “Usually when you’re famous for something people want you to stay like that forever, but I’ve always moved as an artist. I think to be creative you have to be fluid.

“With rockabilly I loved it and been around the world with it and I think it’s very important music – it’s original punk rock and it broke a lot of rules, it’s very sexy and wild – but as a writer I couldn’t go any further with that.

The period around Life Love Flesh Blood coincided with the divorce of her husband Darrel Higham, who also left his group. May, 46, says she’s not afraid to reassess her life from time to time. “I’ve done it a few times and I’m sure I’ll do it again,” she said. “I have to take stock. Sometimes you might look at one domain and sometimes you might look at all of this and think “what are we really doing here? We have a chance in this life … You can easily fall into patterns where you try to please others. It’s good to take a step back and take a look at everything every now and then. “

The song Just One Kiss stars Noel Gallagher and Ronnie Wood, who May first met 30 years ago when she was a 16-year-old singer at a Dublin blues club. “Ronnie came in and jumped on stage and we stalled and had a blast,” she recalls.

“This is where I learned my trade, this club. I had never studied music, I learned there with the best musicians. I had so much fun but I would really like to listen and take it all in like teenagers do.

Years later, the couple were reintroduced by Jeff Beck at the Classic Rock Awards and have remained friends. “I think about the world of him, I like him a lot,” she said. “He is a brilliant man and a very good friend. He asked me to sing on his Chuck Berry album, which I did, and we did a mini tour of that … I asked him to perform on my album and he was there like that.

“With Noel we were texting and he said ‘send me the song’ and he loved it. Andrew Innes, the guitarist of Primal Scream, is also on this track, so it’s full of rock ‘n’ roll vibe. I said to the guys, ‘this is a dirty little rock’n’roll number, you wanna be there?’ and I’m so glad they did because it appealed to them.

Other guests on the album include women’s rights activists Shola Mos-Shogbamimu and Gina Martin. “I always want people to think a little more, we have to do it,” says May, recounting how she first heard from Dr Mos-Shogbamimu at an International Women’s Day event. “She’s amazing, everything that comes out of her, she’s so articulate and thoughtful and she’s just a wonderful activist, just like Gina Martin. She fought to make upskirting illegal.

“Made To Love is a song I wrote about people who fight for love, and people who gave their lives for love too, so I named John Lennon and Jesus and Martin Luther King and Marielle Franco, who was a great activist in Brazil. who was shot in broad daylight and no one has ever been brought to justice. Of all these people, all they talked about was love. I thought it was really worth fighting, loving and accepting each other the best you could.

“Gina and Shola inspire me a lot and I learn from them regularly. I will also ask them questions about the things I am struggling with and get the information. I asked them to be a part of Made To Love, it seemed appropriate to me and I was delighted when they said yes.

Last year, May released her debut poetry EP, Slip of the Tongue.

It was, she said, something she had wanted to do “for quite some time.” “I had people who didn’t believe it or thought I was crazy to publish poetry, that people wouldn’t be interested,” she says. “I find audiences are often underestimated by executives in the music industry. I think people can sense when something isn’t real a mile away and then if something is real and someone is going into something with their whole heart, I think people are open to that. I think most people have some kind of literature that they like, a book or a poem that you used to say when you were a kid or your mother used to say. Most people have poetry in their life, even if it dates back years.

“But I also think a lot of people have been put off by poetry in school, being forced to examine line by line something from hundreds of years ago that they can’t relate to. So I wanted to do something that was right now. I find poetry such a great way to put a little nugget of joy in your day. Instead of putting poetry books on shelves, I think you should leave them lying around the house. If you put your phone down for a minute and pick one up in a minute or two, you’ll have read a page and it will give you something to think about for the rest of the day. “

11 Past The Hour will be released on Friday April 16. Imeldamay.co.uk

Justin Lee Solano, 35, of Levelland, has been arrested after being charged with breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house and kidnapping her.

Reports say that at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Monday April 12, the victim, who has not been identified, and her friend were inside their home in the 2700 block of 68th Street when her dog began to barking at someone at the front door. When she opened the door, she saw Solano approaching the house.

The victim said Solano had a history of “violent tendencies” so she immediately ordered her friend to call the police. Soon after, Solano allegedly kicked the front door and punched the victim in the face.

KAMC News report that Solano told the victim that he would hurt her if she did not accompany him. He allegedly dragged the victim to the door and grabbed her keys, leaving her in the victim’s vehicle.

Police located Solano driving in the 2700 block of 68th Street towards the victim’s home at around 10 p.m. He was subsequently arrested for intent to commit a felony, aggravated kidnapping and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The victim refused EMS treatment.

Solano remains in the Lubbock County Detention Center with obligations totaling $ 60,000.

Can Kyler Edwards Really Reach His High Potential In Houston? https://i-friesland.com/can-kyler-edwards-really-reach-his-high-potential-in-houston/ Wed, 14 Apr 2021 20:10:01 +0000 https://i-friesland.com/can-kyler-edwards-really-reach-his-high-potential-in-houston/ Kyler Edwards announced his move to the Transfer Portal after former men’s basketball head coach Chris Beard made his decision to leave Texas Tech for the University of Texas. Kyler Edwards announced his move to the Transfer Portal after former men’s basketball head coach Chris Beard made his decision to leave Texas Tech for the University of Texas. Then, when Mark Adams was promoted to Head Coach, Edwards announced on Twitter that he would stay at Texas Tech using the hashtag #RRFL, or Red Raider for Life.

Days later, Edwards deleted the tweet and Texas Tech Basketball released a statement from Mark Adams thanking him for his time at school and saying the talented junior would indeed remain in the transfer portal.

Just days after all of this, Edwards walked out of the mysterious portal with a new hashtag. This time #forthecity. With that, Kyler Edwards is on his way to Houston.

Kyler Edwards’ time at Texas Tech will always be marred by the missed delay against Arkansas and Waffles this offseason between the transfer portal and the squad. Even before that, Edwards was a point of contention among Red Raider fans who always expected more from him after a solid freshman role on the squad that ultimately failed at the national championship.

When fans were expecting a big jump from Edwards in sophomore, it just didn’t materialize. The team struggled and Edwards’ confidence seemed intermittent. Sometimes an aggressive player would show up in his uniform, and other times a shy player would wear his number 0 jersey. His three-point percentage also dropped in sophomore with his volume increased.

As a junior, Edwards played a similar role to the previous season and still isn’t expected to be the primary option with the addition of Mac McClung and the emergence of Terrence Shannon. But fans still wanted Edwards to become a consistent threat and be this guy. His three-point percentage certainly improved, but Edwards’ killer instinct was still hit or miss.

As president of the Kyler Edwards fan club, I would like to mention that Edwards has never been bad; he just had giant expectations that were never fully met. To be fair, the program also fell short of expectations in its second and third seasons.

What Kyler Edwards did in the third year has become a much more efficient player. He scored the same score per game on fewer shots overall, while playing fewer minutes. His offensive efficiency skyrocketed and his defensive acumen remained the same.

None of this translated into improved scores, which is what most fans are focusing on.

I think Houston is a very good choice for Kyler Edwards stylistically, and he could finally thrive on that level. It can also wear the Jordan branding instead of Curry Flow 8. But that doesn’t matter.

Edwards’ news comes a day after Micah Peavy joined the TCU Horned Frogs.

There is no doubt about the extraordinary talents of Quincy Jones. After all, his work behind the production office speaks for itself and has received 80 Grammy nominations, as well as creating countless hit records. Jones walks on musical water so much that no one will dare question his frank opinion, but his derisive comments about the Beatles crossed a sacred line for many, even if it wasn’t the first time.

It’s a boring myth that Ringo Starr wasn’t meant to be the Beatles’ best drummer, which John Lennon reportedly said during the band’s heyday. However, a quick Google search, and you’ll soon learn that Lennon never said those famous words about the percussionist. The joke first circulated on a BBC comedy series in 1981 and has since been accepted as the truth by many, damaging Ringo’s reputation by making him a laughing stock.

In this regard, however, it was not only Ringo who was the target of Jones’ barrage of abuse as he called the Fab Four “the worst musicians in the world.” The super producer arranged the track ‘Love Is a Many Splendoured Thing’ for Starr’s debut solo album in 1970 Sentimental journey but apparently had no affection for the group. The experience is one that Jones vividly remembers, albeit for the wrong reasons.

“They were the worst musicians in the world,” he told The Beatles in 2018 to The New Yorker. “They were no-game motherfuckers. Paul was the worst bass player I have ever heard. And Ringo? Don’t even talk about it.

Jones then referred to that infamous shoot with Ringo that pushed him up the wall. “I remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo took three hours for a four bar thing that he was trying to fix on a song,” recalls the producer. “He couldn’t get it. We said, ‘Buddy, why don’t you have some lager and lime, shepherd’s pie, and take an hour and a half and relax a little bit. ”

“That’s what he did, and we called Ronnie Verrell, a jazz drummer. Ronnie walked in for 15 minutes and tore it up. Ringo comes back and says, “George, can you play it back for me one more time?” George did, and Ringo said, “That didn’t sound so bad.” And I said, ‘Yeah, motherfucker, because it’s not you.’ – Great guy, though.

Those Jones comments would have struck a nerve with almost any artist on the planet, to have such a talented producer commenting so vehemently on your ability. However, when you’ve realized what Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr did, it might be a little harder to take it to heart.

Once the commentaries were printed they quickly circulated everywhere and battle lines were drawn – Jones was at a crossroads. He had the choice to stay true to his words or to clumsily try to explain himself to Paul McCartney over the phone. “So he called me, and I’m home on my own,” McCartney recalled to GQ in 2018. “And I was done working, so I had a drink, and now I groove at home, I cook, I have some wine, I am in a good mood, and I don’t. crazy. So I get a phone call: “Is this Mr. McCartney?” ‘Yes.’ “Quincy would like to talk to you. Because he always worked with security guards.

Macca continued, “I said, ‘Hey, quince!’ “Paul, how are you, man?” “I’m fine – how are you, motherfucker!” I’m fair with him. Son Jones was making his arguments for misrepresentation: “’Paul, I didn’t really say that thing – I don’t know what happened, man. I never said that. You know I love you guys!

“I said, ‘If you had said that, you know what I would have said? Fuck you, Quincy Jones! And he laughed. I said, “You know I would say that fuck you, Quincy Jones, you fucking crazy motherfucker!” So we actually just laughed. And he was like, ‘Oh, Paul, you know I love you so much.’ “Yeah, I know that, Quince.”

McCartney’s refusal to reproduce his love for Jones explains precisely his true feelings about the no-apology. This suggests that Macca didn’t believe the claim that the post got Jones back together but was still being cool and nonchalant about the whole situation anyway. He was, after all, a Beatle.

Quincy Jones has worked alongside some of the most talented musicians who have ever graced the land. He’s probably worked with musicians who are technically more capable than the Beatles, in fact that’s probably a certainty. But to call them “the world’s worst musicians”, or any band, is utterly laughable. Paul McCartney was on the right track when he said poetically, “Quincy Jones, you fucking crazy motherfucker!”
